What it is
Gorilla habituation is the long form of the gorilla encounter. Instead of the standard hour, you spend up to four hours with a mountain gorilla family that is still being habituated — the gradual, years-long process by which researchers accustom a wild group to a careful human presence. It is offered only in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, where the families undergoing the process live.
Because you are out with the trackers and researchers who know the group, the experience is quieter, slower and more intimate than a standard trek, and the permit numbers are smaller still. It suits travellers who have trekked before, or who simply want as much time in the forest with the gorillas as the rules allow.

Good to know
- How is this different from gorilla trekking?
- Standard trekking gives you one hour with a fully habituated family. The habituation experience gives up to four hours with a family still being habituated, alongside the research team — fewer permits, a longer and quieter encounter.
- Do I need to be very fit?
- It is more demanding than a standard trek simply because you are in the forest longer and the group can be harder to reach. A reasonable level of fitness helps; porters are available, and the pace follows the gorillas.
