Frequently asked questions
The questions travellers ask us most, answered. If yours isn't here, we're a message away.
How fit do I need to be for gorilla trekking?
Moderate fitness is enough for most trekkers. Treks last from one to six hours depending on where the gorilla family is that morning; porters are available and recommended, and the pace is set by the group.
Is gorilla trekking safe?
The trek is run by the national park authority, not by us. You are briefed by rangers at the trailhead, walk with an armed ranger escort, keep a set distance from the family, and spend one hour with them before turning back. Groups are limited to eight trekkers, and anyone with a cold or flu is asked not to trek, because gorillas catch human illnesses.
What is the minimum age for gorilla trekking?
Fifteen, in both Uganda and Rwanda. It is set by the wildlife authorities and is not something an operator can waive. Younger children can still travel with you — we build the rest of the itinerary around the trekking day.
When is the best time to go gorilla trekking?
The drier windows — June to August and December to February — give firmer forest trails, with June and July typically driest. The forests are trekkable year round, and the wetter months are quieter and greener; the savannah and lake stages travel well in any month.
What should I pack for gorilla trekking?
Sturdy waterproof boots, long sleeves and trousers, gardening gloves for grip on the vegetation, and a light rain jacket — the forest is wet and steep. Avoid dark blue and black, which attract tsetse flies. Add a hat, sunglasses, high-factor sun cream and insect repellent.
How far in advance should I book a gorilla permit?
As early as you can. Daily numbers are strictly limited by the wildlife authorities, and the drier months go first. We check availability for your dates before anything is committed, and secure the permit as soon as your booking is confirmed.
Do I need a visa and a yellow fever certificate?
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for entry to Uganda; Rwanda requires it from travellers arriving from yellow-fever-endemic countries. Most visitors need a visa, and both countries offer electronic visas applied for before travel. If your route covers both, the East Africa Tourist Visa can cover Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya on one multiple-entry visa. Requirements change, so always confirm the current rules with the official immigration portals.
Should I choose Uganda or Rwanda for gorilla trekking?
Both are excellent and the difference is practical rather than one being better. Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park is a two-to-three-hour drive from Kigali and the treks tend to be gentler, but the permit costs more. Uganda's Bwindi is a longer journey from Entebbe, the terrain is steeper, and the permit is less expensive; Uganda is also the only place offering the four-hour habituation experience. Many travellers combine the two, and we advise on the right fit for your budget and time.
